A miniSD is more than 60% smaller than
a conventional SD Card.
miniSD cards are mainly used as memory expansion
for smart phones or mobile phones, above
all from Asian manufacturers. They are ideal
for storing digital photos, videos, MP3 files,
games and other data in mobile phones.
The miniSD Card with 11 pins (21.5 x 20 x 1.4 mm) can
be used like an SD Card with the
help of an optional
adapter.
This allows it to be used e.g. in in digital cameras too.
It uses the same flash technology as CompactFlash and PC Cards, but
the data is transferred serially rather than the parallel
data transfer used by the ATA protocol.
The miniSD High Capacity card
with 4 GB capacity is not downwards compatible to
the existing miniSD cards. The new miniSDHC memory media fits into
standard miniSD slots or adapters but applications as card
reader or mobile phones explicitly need to be compatible
with the cards.
